About this deal

The wonderful illustrations help bring the message to life that no matter our differences we are still loved and that love will never die. Her favourite colour is blue or, more precisely, four different shades of blue: cerulean blue, cobalt blue, Mediterranean turquoise blue and warm ultramarine blue. There are many recognizable similarities in Small's world and that of a young child's-dinner in a high chair, bath time, bedtime stories, and favorite toys. As in books like Lisa McCourt's I Love You, Stinky Face, the child ups the ante with unpleasant scenarios: what if Small were some other ostensibly uncuddly creature, like a squishy bug or a crocodile? It has lovely rhyming language throughout which would help develop children's speech from an early age. There is a wonderful wealth of detail in the illustrations (we particularly enjoy counting the chickens) that lends itself nicely to teaching children the names of household items and F, at the age of about one, was happily pointing to stars and the moon upon request.

PreS-Feeling grumpy, Small, a little fox, has a tantrum that turns the living room topsy-turvy, after which he questions Large about the resiliency and endurance of his parental love-"If I were a grumpy grizzly bear,/would you still love me? Worth noting: The language is forthright in places, which some parents may find raises challenging questions from a child. In this reassuring and warm picture book the hugely talented Debi Gliori manages to treat the familiar subject of childhood worries in a very fresh, original and inventive way. He shows his fears and frustrations by banging and making a racket until his understanding mother asks him what the problem is.

Large shows Small the night sky, and explains that some of the stars died a long time ago, but they continue to glow and shine brightly. Small’ an anxious, grim and grumpy character who is feeling unloved is comforted by ‘Large’ that he is loved. I also like that the child and parent in the book aren't gendered or identified beyond "Small" and "Large," so any child can fill in any parental figure. The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged. She is best known for her black comedy Pure Dead series for older children, which display strong elements of family lives amid dark and fantasy-based plots. For me it is no secret, that English books for England and the USA are often printed with minor changes (taking into account the peculiarities of the language).

I would also use this cross-curricular in art where we can take inspiration from the illustrations of the book. In this reassuring and warm picture book, the hugely talented Debi Gliori manages to treat the familiar subject of childhood worries in a very fresh, original and inventive way. With a gentle, rhyming text and illustrations that exude a snuggly warmth, she offers a reassuring, though ultimately cloying answer. It's a lovely story to read before bed to make a young child feel safe and no that no matter what their large will love them. The girl in this book likes to win, she likes to be spontaneous, fast and strong, and because she also likes to dress in t-shirt and shorts, she is forever getting mistaken for a boy.

The rhyming text itself is simple and sweet, making for a good read-aloud, and the adorable illustrations are colorful and appealing.

When my son was still young enough that I was hormonal and prone to crying for no reason, we bought "No matter what" by Debi Gliori, an author I hadn't yet heard of. I bought as an Easter gift for my 1 year old as he's not a massive fan of chocolate but he loves books. The bright and sweet illustrations show Small going through a comforting bedtime routine and being reassured at every step that he is loved.
