You are to be commended for your persistence, if not for your perception. Tomorrow you must do as your master bids. For now, I have already said good day.” The Republic of Thieves has all the colorful action, witty repartee, and devious scheming that fans of the series have come to expect." ( Wired) Grand, grandiose, grandiloquent . . . No critic is likely to fault Lynch in his overflowing qualities of inventiveness, audacious draftsmanship, and sympathetic characterization.” — Locus Scholar Erkemar Zodesti was regarded as the finest physiker in Lashain, a prodigy with the bone saw and the alchemist’s crucible. He’d also shown complete disinterest, for three days straight, in Jean’s requests for a consultation.

Maybe, had the man taken the time of his life to the keystrokes required for his vapid prolific tweeting into a manuscript instead, perhaps he neednt merit such insult; but he chose not to.I will say that if you like the characters and the writing in the first two books, you will find more of the same here. That makes this definitely a must read for those who have enjoyed the series so far. But, for me it will just be for the sake of connecting book two to book four – which will hopefully return to a much more exciting and riveting adventure. Jean, listen. I took some of the money when we got here on the boat... . I hid it. Loosened a floorboard under the bed.” Again, this isn’t a major downside for me (on the contrary, I prefer not having long sections of recap), but it is worth noting. Potentially Offensive Content The epilogue gives a story about the Falconer and his journey regaining power. The epilogue ends with the Falconer killing his mother, Patience. Difficult" and "impossible" are cousins often mistaken for one another, with very little in common.”

Later in life, they are both assigned to Chains, and as they age, things become more complicated between them. Don't get me wrong: first books are hard, especially in secondary-world fantasy. You have to introduce an entire world. You're constantly walking the knife-edge between boring people by explaining too much, and confusing them by explaining too little. His real problem is self--inflicted. You see, we can deaden our minds to any suffering of the flesh. But that art requires caution. It’s extremely dangerous to use it in haste.” Well, given it only took six years to produce the third novel in a planned set of seven, we might be having to settle in for a long one here. At this rate it'll be 2037 before we know what happens. I'd like the author to speed things up a little if he can. Maybe one a year?Third your characters are unrealistic stereotpyes of political correctness. Is it really necessary for the sake of popular sensibilities to have in a fantasy what we have in the real world? I read fantasy to get away from politically correct cliches. this review contains mass amounts of quotes and fanart because I'm so inlove with these books and can't get enough. You have been warned** It wasn’t Cortessa, or a dog--leech, or even the master of the Villa Suvela, as Jean had expected. It was a woman, dressed in a richly embroidered oilcloak streaming with water. She held an alchemical globe in her hands, and by its pale light Jean could see that she was not young. The carriage rattled to a halt, and the driver hopped down to open the door. Jean, knife half--concealed by the wide cuff of his coat, gestured for Zodesti to step out first. The scholar did, carrying a leather bag and a bundle of clothing.

Lynch has some great lines and banter throughout this book and I was able to follow along with his story so much better this time around. It seemed like he had a clear idea where his story was going and I loved the journey that he took me on. Plus we are left with a very unexpected ending that made me want to continue on right then….but alas just a little longer until the next book is out. I regret to inform your master that the scholar is presently unable to accommodate his request for a consultation.” The servant reappeared behind the iron gate with empty hands. The envelope, a token of earnestness, was of course gone. Whether into the hands of Zodesti or this servant, Jean couldn’t say. You heard,” Jean gasped, “that we’d finally discovered the cure for being born with a face like a stray dog’s ass.” I have no intention of murdering either of you. Ever.” The woman folded her hands in front of her chest. “What more proof do you need than the fact that you’re still alive? Could you have stopped me?” We then got a real update on Thorn from Scott on June 9 2022 - his first update since May 2019. Most of this update is about three forthcoming novellas set in the Gentleman Bastards universe between Thieves and before Thorn.Zodesti stood still as Jean blindfolded him, pulled up the cloak’s hood, and pushed the hat down on top of it. It was a good effect. From more than a few feet away, the blindfold would be concealed by the hat or lost in the shadows of the hood.

This review doesn’t really contain spoilers until the second part, when I say there are spoilers. However, some vague information about earlier books is drawn upon in the first part. If you’re being cautious, don’t read this review.) I do think the author’s writing has improved in this novel. He still uses the same eloquent descriptions, but the superfluous and convoluted information about the scenery are kept to a minimum. In the previous book it felt he’d spent paragraphs describing inanimate objects and irrelevant places; I was glad to see a more concise approach to his writing. I think he has got the balance just right in this novel and I can easily see this developing into a really strong series. I can’t wait to see where the author takes this in the future. Oh,” said Cortessa to Jean as the tumult was winding down, “one thing more. Leone gets a minute alone with you in the corner. For his nose.”I'd recommend this to all fantasy lovers 15+. I also think this series would be a great introduction for someone wanting to read adult fantasy. At his next sip, he coughed, and a ruby--colored droplet spiraled down into his wine, leaving a purplish tail as it dissolved.
